about

The first solo outing from Norway’s Per Øydir, better known to the public as Perry Dear, bass guitarist of the successriding beat group Peter Berry & The Shake Set.

Finding success as a solo bass guitarist is very unlikely, unless your name is Jet Harris.

“This record is a personal ambition for me, and I just think it’s fab that it’s being released. Obviously Jet’s success has inspired me a lot, but don’t forget that Bobby Taylor of Chris Farlowe’s Thunderbirds tried the same thing, and his record sank without a trace, despite his version of Temptation being as good as anything in the Hit-Parade today.”

As the title suggests this is a collection of evergreens witha beat. The EP opens with Ved Rondane from Edvard Grieg’s Opus 33, a beaty arrangement with the Fender VI at the fore. Next is Always, written by Irvin Berlin in 1925 as a wedding present for his wife. “On one of our trips to Sweden, we heard Ken Levy & The Phantoms playing it, and I must admit that my version is pretty much based on their take.”

Side two starts off with a blast. I bet you’ve never heard The Way You Look Tonight like this before. Perry explains: “We just had a lot of fun with this. The producer Milton von Krogh played around with the studio equipment and we realised someof the effects he created had a Telstar-feel, so we decided to do it a bit like that. We both think The Tornados are gear, besides, it gave me a chance to play the organ as well.

The EP closes with Maria from West Side Story, once again feauturing what I thought was the Fender VI, but I stood corrected by Perry: “On this one I actually use a Burns Split Sound six-string bass. I first heard this song in pop-guise by the Danish group Melvis & His Gentlemen, and got really taken by it. Another great version is by Sounds Incorporated, so I guess I’ll get some tough competition” Perry laughs, and with this he unawarely sums up the essence of today’s pop-industry; competition.

So, there you go, four tracks by an ambitious young man. Depending on your view, this is either new and exciting versions of old standards or uncalled for tampering with our musical heritage. Let’s just hope that this record will help to widen the musical horizon of today’s youngsters.
